Tykables LLC is an American ABDL company headquartered in Illinois that sells its own line of adult diapers, apparel, and accessories. The company originally sold adult diapers under the brand name Snuggies.
Company History[edit]
Tykables LLC was founded in February 2014 as Snuggies Diapers Inc by John-Michael Williams and started manufacturing diapers under the trade name Snuggies. The name Snuggies was chosen as a reference to a long-running series of edited images created by the prolific community artist Vincent VanGoo, showing stereotypically manly men in various situations, often rugged in nature, wearing prominent diapers, captioned with oft-humorous descriptions of the man depicted in the image, and tagged with the logo of a fictional diaper company named Snuggies, itself a play on the Huggies brand owned by Kimberly-Clark.
Snuggies Diapers[edit]
While website for Snuggies Diapers announcing that the fantasy brand would soon become a reality was online as early as February 3, 2011,[1] no real progress of note occurred until Snuggies Diapers Inc was registered as a Nevada Domestic Corporation on February 14, 2014. Much of the early history of the brand has been lost to the annals of time either as a result of the loss of community sites such as RUPadded, the Tumblr purge, or the removal of public access to content.
Crowdfunding the Waddler[edit]
The earliest conclusive surviving history of the company is a blog post to the Snuggies Diapers blog[2] on February 17, 2014 announcing the impending launch of their first product, stating their goals for the company, and asking for community support in raising funds for their initial order via the sale of gift cards, investment loans, or the purchase of stock in the company.[3]
On March 10th, the first look at the new diapers, with artwork designed by Vincent Vangoo, was published on the blog along with an announcement of website updates to implement an eCommerce platform,[4] further updates followed with the company announcing on March 25 that they were just $10,000 USD from being able to order their first round of production samples.[5] By May 7th the necessary funding was in place with several manufacturers being vetted with the hopes of having an order for production samples finalized by mid-June.[6]
On July 3rd it was announced that the final samples of the new diaper had been ordered on June 30th, with delivery expected in 6 weeks, and soliciting additional investment in the company to help finance a full production run.[7] A video of the bags being manufactured was released on July 11th[8], and on July 18th a surprise announcement was posted announcing that Snuggies Diapers would be hosting a booth at Folsom Street Fair with the new Snuggies Diapers Waddler available for public sale.[9]
On July 30, 2014 the Waddler was officially launched for presale at a price of $25 per bag, with additional bags available for $15 per bag.[10] Despite this, by August 27th it was announced that production samples had only just cleared customs and that only a limited number of sample diapers would be available for sale at Folsom.[11]
On September 19, 2014, it was announced that the new diaper would feature two 1.25-inch (3.175cm) tapes per side, a full body print, front and rear waistbands, standing leak guards and leg cuffs, and an upgraded 67-ounce (1981 mL) capacity and taller landing zone than the original samples. The company expected to begin fulfilling pre-sale orders by November, and the company intended to offer local distribution from points in Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Australia.[12]
The announcement regarding international distribution was followed up on October 3rd, announcing a partnership for Australia and New Zealand with PaddingPlus, a local ABDL distributor, with other international markets being handled via direct shipment from the US, pending local distribution arrangements in those respective territories. On November 21, 2014, the company announced that Australian orders had already begun to ship from PaddingPlus, with US orders expected to ship in early December due to port congestion[13] and on December 9th it was announced that US pre-sales would begin shipping out on the following day.[14] The Snuggies Diapers Waddler had officially arrived, though local international distribution would not hit many markets until August 17, 2015 and would face its own series of challenges.[15]
Waddler Overnight[edit]
On May 11, 2015, Snuggies Diapers announced the #SnuggiesMystery contest.[16] This contest turned out to be a creative way to announce the new Waddler Overnight featuring an increased 135-ounce (3992 mL) absorption capacity, upgraded plastic, and a fade when wet design. The new diaper would be sold at the same price as the original Waddler, while the Waddler would receive a price reduction.[17]
Snuggers and the S.Ex[edit]
Following the #SnuggiesMystery contest, a new brand and diaper were announced in the form of Snuggers and the S.Ex respectively. While the Snuggers name had appeared on the company's website in its 2011 incarnation, the link had only led to a landing page and no further information was available. Snuggers was launched as a counterpart brand to Snuggies specifically intended to serve the DL market and the S.Ex, short for Scene Extender, was to be its first product launched to appeal to the BDSM community built on the same chassis as the new Waddler Overnight.
ikrinkle[edit]
On May 28, 2014, the Snuggies Diapers team announced the launch of a new ABDL social networking site named ikrinkle[18] with public beta tests having been launched two weeks prior. ikrinkle was intended to be a free social network for the community with a particular focus on launching apps for both iOS and Android, something no other ABDL community had done. Unfortunately, on September 11th the company announced that after months of effort expended in an attempt to comply with AppStore requirements, they had been informed by Apple that their app would never be approved.[19] It is unclear what exactly happened to the service but it appears to have shut down some time between January and October of 2016 at which point the domain had been redirected to the Tykables website.
Trademark Issues[edit]
On May 23, 2014, Snuggies Diapers Inc (Snuggies) filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to trademark the name 'Snuggies Diapers' for use in the adult diapers space.[20] After initial review by the USPTO, and minor amendment to the filing to note that the trademark would in no way claim exclusive right to the word "Diapers"[21], the application was published for opposition in the Trademark Official Gazette on October 28, 2014[22].
On Feb. 25, 2015, Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc. (Kimberly-Clark) filed a formal opposition to the trademark application on the grounds that the Snuggies brand would dilute Kimberly-Clark's own registered trademarks for the Huggies brand, which had priority dating back to its registration in 1977, the likelihood of confusion for consumers who might think that Snuggies was related to the Huggies brand, and the belief that the Snuggies brand could tarnish the reputation of the Huggies brand due to its association with the ABDL fetish scene[23]. After several months, and following settlement negotiations between Snuggies and Kimberly-Clark, the trademark application was withdrawn on August 10[24] and the application was formally abandoned on August 21.[25]
On September 29, 2015, a post was made to the Snuggies Diapers blog[26] announcing that the company would be rebranding itself as Tykables. This was done to enable the company to register a trademark for their brand which was impossible under the Snuggies name due to Kimberly-Clark's Huggies brand having priority.[27]
Tykables[edit]
Strom Holdings, LLC v. Tykables LLC[edit]
In 2018 Strom Holdings, LLC (ABU) filed a lawsuit against Tykables LLC over the use of the term "Space" in the name of a new diaper the company wished to launch under the name "Space Cadets". This lawsuit was the result of Tykables' choice to willfully infringe upon ABU's registered trademark for the word "Space" in the adult diaper market and the two parties' inability to come to mutually agreeable terms without legal intervention.
